History of TERRAP

What if by the end of treatment you find yourself going places and doing things simply based on what you want or prefer to do and what is in your best interests?
  - Julian Herskowitz, PhD.

TERRAP is a National Organization that was founded by Dr. Hardy in 1975. Dr. Hardy was a psychiatrist in California who was treating many people with symptoms of anxiety. As all psychiatrists were trained at that time, he focused his work discussing early childhood traumas, family dynamics and marital issues. Although his patients did find some of the connections interesting, it did not relieve them of their anxiety symptoms nor their phobic avoidance. As a result of his own frustration, Dr. Hardy decided to put together a program that incorporated education, relaxation training, cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy. He decided to put his research in an easy to read, understand and implement manual. What he found was that by providing his patients with specific techniques and gradual exposure they were soon relieved of their symptoms. Dr. Hardy was the founder for The Phobia Society, which is now the Anxiety Disorders of America Association. He is considered one of the pioneers in phobia treatment. Today, Dr. Hardy’s 18 week patented manual is offered in all of our Long Island locations.

We offer the program in either a group or individual setting. The first step in getting involved is to set up a consultation for an initial assessment. The therapist will complete a comprehensive evaluation and discuss some of your options for treatment. You may call the main office at 631 549-8867 to set up an appointment at any of our locations.

Many potential clients ask us the question, "I've been in therapy many times for my anxiety, how is your treatment different"? First of all, our therapists are specialists in anxiety disorders. We understand the myriad of ways anxiety can manifest. Whether it a strange thought, frightening body sensations or fears and compulsions, we have extensive experience in treating them all. Our approach to treatment is symptom focused and time- limited. As a participant in our program, you will receive the entire manual one lesson at a time. These lessons are yours to keep. We will work with you in setting up a treatment program that is designed with your particular issues in mind. Instead of focusing on your past, we give you tools to work within the present. Our main focus is on the here and now, identifying what is not working in your life currently, and working on tools to deal with them. We offer a step by step approach to begin the process of no longer avoiding uncomfortable situations. Life skills, such as assertiveness and problem solving, are only a few aspects of our comprehensive program for panic and anxiety disorders. We also have a strong network of professionals in the community should you need someone to monitor your medication, an understanding primary care doctor or other specialist that will be sensitive to your anxiety disorder.
